Alex Gorichky distributes signs for the April 30, 2015 informational meeting held by Port Canaveral. The standing-room-only event — with more than 300 attendees — was the only one held by the CPA, despite assurances by Executive Director John Walsh that meetings would be held "frequently" to keep the public informed on the Canaveral Rail Extension.

Proposed Brevard County Commission Resolution Opposes Canaveral Rail Project

August 20, 2015

On Sept. 3, Brevard County Commissioner and Vice-Chair Jim Barfield will propose a resolution opposing Port Canaveral's current plans for a commercial rail extension. The meeting,  at the Viera Government Center, Commission Meeting Room in Building C, begins at 5 p.m.

Members of the public that would like to speak for or against the rail plan will have five minutes each to do so (optional) prior to a vote. Those that wish to speak should arrive early as a large crowd is anticipated and signups may be limited. It is not necessary to speak in order to show your support for or against the rail project or resolution.

To learn more about the history of the project and its potential impacts, see my initial story and followups.

Former Canaveral Port Commissioner Sue Ford, who started the petition to stop the proposed rail extension has been instrumental in helping draft the resolution with Barfield's office. To learn more about the rail project, visit her website. To date, her petition has gathered more than 2300 signatures.

You can also learn more about the rail and its potential impacts via Capt. Alex Gorichky's NoFIll NoKill group on Facebook.

If you can't attend the Sep. 3 meeting, but would like to voice concerns against the rail or show support in favor of it, you can do so by emailing your county commissioner at the links below. Not sure who represents you? Click here to find out or let them all know how you feel.
